Beating the Bounds Benefits Congleton’s Mayor

Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Denis Murphy was delighted to receive a cheque from members of the Congleton 750 group for £254, the proceeds of entry money to the Beating the Bounds walk held on Sunday 10 April.

Beating the Bounds was one of the first events of the town’s 750-year charter celebrations and saw residents aged 4 to 86 complete either a 4.5 mile or 9.9 mile walk around the boundaries of Congleton. A self-guided leaflet showing the Beating the Bounds walk is available from the Congleton Information Centre.

Jenny Unsworth and Cllr Suzie Akers Smith, (shown in the picture in medieval costumes), helped organise the walk and make costumes for the horses and riders at the starting point.

Congleton Town Mayor said: “I would like to thank everyone who played a role In organising the walk or who took part in Beating the Bounds. It was a wonderful day and the funds will be used to support local groups.”

The 750 Working group, chaired by Cllr David Brown, is busy working on more events for the town including a Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Party on the 2 June, a Living History Exhibition in the Town Hall in July, a Medieval Festival in the Park in August and a Medieval Banquet in the Town Hall in September. Further information is available from the Information Centre in the Town Hall or at www.congleton750.org. The Town Council is looking for more help with these events. If are able to offer some time on the day or in advance please contact info@congleton-tc.gov.uk
