Countdown to Christmas in Congleton


Congleton Town Council is puttingthe final preparations in place for the popular Christmas Lights Switch-Ontaking place in the town centre on Friday 24 November. Theevent runs from 4pm-8pm, with the big switch on at 6pm.

The magical evening will be packed full of free entertainment and lots of Christmas cheer for the whole family. Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Rob Moreton said: “We hope as many people as possible will come into town for the tradition of turning on the Christmas Lights. There will be loads going on, to make sure you don’t miss a thing the town council have produced a handy event guide. Find out what’s happening when and where to help you plan your evening! Copies of the guide will be available on the night or you can pick one up in advance from the Congleton Information Centre and Congleton Library. They’re also available to download from the town council website.”

The mayor continues: “I’m particularly looking forward to watching the proud lantern owners displaying their wonderful creations in the traditional lantern parade. The parade will be taking a new route this year, meeting at Cross Street from 5.15pm, ready to set off at 5.35pm leading Santa in his sleighto the main stage for the big Lights Switch-On at 6pm. There is an action packed programme of entertainment on the main stage (next to the big Christmas tree) featuring Rode Hall Silver Band, Andy Hofton and an Ed Sheeran tribute act! The community stage (next to the ‘Our Elizabeth’ statue) will feature performances from local schools, clubs and groups. Aswell as all that, there will be Reindeer, Street Entertainment, Craft Stalls, Local Charity Games, Hot Food & Drink, Santa’s Grotto in the Cygnet Club and lots more!”

In addition to the usual road closure on High Street, Mill Street and Swan Bank will also be closed to traffic this year. The roads will be closed from 12 noon to 10pm.

To make it easier for shoppers to stay longer and enjoy Congleton this Christmas, Congleton Town Council will use its four 'free' parking days on Saturday 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rdDecember. Park for free AFTER 10am in Princess Street car park (market), Back Street car park (behind Lawton Street) and Fairground car park. The Fairground car park still has a three-hour upper limit for parking. Back Park Street car park remains free every day after 3pm.
