A statement about the closure of The George Hotel in Burslem

A spokesperson for Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: “We are aware of reports in the media stating that a number of residents have been left to sleep on the streets following the closure of The George Hotel in Burslem.
“We would like to confirm that a small number of people placed in the hotel by Stoke-on-Trent City Council have all been offered alternative accommodation and we are aware that is also the case for those placed by other agencies.
“Our Rough Sleeper Outreach Team has visited Burslem this morning and has found no evidence of anyone sleeping rough as a result of The George Hotel closing.
“We continue to liaise with, and are working closely with, partner agencies to ensure those who need assistance are receiving it. Our Rough Sleeper Outreach Team will also be increasing patrols in the area over the weekend.
“We would encourage anyone who is concerned about a person sleeping rough, or at risk of sleeping rough, to report it to us via our website or by calling 0800 970 2304 which is a free phone number.”
