Coronation fund set up for Moorlands celebrations

With the coronation of the King and Queen Consort fast approaching, the District Council has launched a grant fund for those planning local celebratory events to mark the historic occasion.

The coronation takes place on Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace has announced a programme of ceremonial, celebratory and community events taking place over the Bank Holiday weekend of 6 to 8 May.

These include a special Coronation Concert, the Coronation Big Lunch and the Big Help Out.

And to help local communities with their events, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has created a £20,000 fund for local celebrations.

Councillor Paul Roberts, Leader of the Council, said: “The coronation will be an historic and memorable spectacle when the country comes together to welcome the reign of the new King and Queen Consort.

“We know that communities in the Moorlands are already planning how they will join in the national celebrations at their own local events.

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy this occasion so I’m pleased to be able to announce this funding which I’m sure will be welcomed by event organisers across the District.”

And to help with the preparations, the Council has also announced that parking in its car parks will be free on Saturday 6 May.

Councillor James Aberley, Cabinet member for Customer Services, said: “The coronation Bank Holiday weekend is set to be a busy one with people shopping for their events and celebrations.

“And, to give businesses a boost, we’re waiving parking charges in our car parks to encourage people to make those purchases locally and support their local town centres.

“There are plenty of excellent retailers and other services across the District so let’s make this special weekend one to remember for our local businesses as well.”

The Coronation Grant Fund is open to applications from Town and Parish Councils. Parishes may wish to consider submitting joint bids or making funds available to community events supported by the Town and Parish councils.

There’s more information, including an application form, at www.staffsmoorlands.gov.uk/Coronation and applications must be submitted by 22 March.
