It was a good night for our local teams in the firt round of the Carabao Cup as Stoke City took a 2-1 victory over West Bromich Albion at the BET365 Stadium.

City opened with scoring courtesy of an own goal from Albions Griffiths on 27 minutes which is the way it stayed into the second half before the baggies equalised on 64 minutes with a goal from Thomas-Asante but they were level for less that a minute as Stoke scored on 65 minutes with a goal from Vidigal giving the Potters victory in front of a crowd of 10,583.

Port Vale kick started their season and bounced back from the weekend's defeat at Barnsley with a 3-2 victory over Fleetwood Town at Vale Park.

Hayes, put Town in front on 5 minutes which got home supporters fearing the worst, but the Valiants equalised with a goal from Chislett on 18 minutes to level the score. Graydon put the visitors in front once again early in the second half with a goal from Graydon on 47 minutes, Vale once again rallied and got an equaliser with a goal from Thomas on 58 minutes to level the scores. The home side kept battling away and took the lead on 72 minutes as Chislett scored his second of the game giving Port Vale a 3-2 victory in front of a crowd of 2,743.

Crewe Alexandra are also into the draw for the next round after they beat Sunderland 5-3 on penalties after the sides were locked at 1-1 at the end of the 90 minutes.

The Alex opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a goal from Offord, but unfortunately they could not hold onto the lead as Rigg equalised for the home side on 64 minutes.

Attendance: 10,763.

In the FA Cup it was also a good night for our local clubs as Hanley Town gained a 2-1 victory over Hereford Pegasus and Kidsgrove Athletic beat Lye Town by the same score line, and Newcastle Town beat Romulus 1-0 to move into the next round also.
