Growthpoint gives Angela 'a new lease of life’

A community-based activities service for people with mental health issues has been praised for giving someone 'a new lease of life'.

Angela first came to Growthpoint, based behind Stoke Rep Theatre, in 2008, and despite being apprehensive at first, was welcomed into the group and soon began getting involved in arts and crafts projects. This had a beneficial effect on her physical and mental health.

Angela had previously struggled with her mental health and alcohol addiction, but attending Growthpoint on a regular basis helped her to seek support and rehabilitation for her addiction.

She has now gone on to support other people accessing Growthpoint, and has become a mentor for the group and advised others about how to cope with various issues.

Angela said: “I feel I can help others based on my experiences. Growthpoint has given me a new lease on life and I feel it is important to give something back.

“The group gives me structure and also allows me to express my artistic side.”

Councillor Duncan Walker, Cabinet Member for Adult Services said: “Stories such as Angela’s are really inspiring and not only show Growthpoint can help people with mental health issues to seek support, but also go on to support others who may be in a similar situation.

“The aim of Growthpoint is to provide a safe and welcoming work environment. I’ve also seen first-hand the work the group can do, with the fantastic garden furniture they created for the gardens at Marrow House.”
