Hundreds limbered up ready to ‘Beat the Bounds’ of Congleton

An ancient custom dating back to medieval times, saw just under 300 townsfolk ‘Beating the Bounds’ of Congleton on Sunday 10 April. The long-lost tradition was organised by Congleton Town Council to celebrate 750 years since Congleton received its first charter.

The town mayor and town crier led the procession with horses and riders adding a medieval atmosphere to the start of the walk. With the sun shining the weather conditions were perfect for taking in Congleton’s beautiful countryside. Cllr Denis Murphy, Congleton Town Mayor said: “It was fantastic to see so many walkers young and old and their four-legged friends turn out for this historic walk.”

Most of the walkers took up the gauntlet of the 9.9 mile circular walk while 59 opted for the more accessible 4.5 mile route. Both walks set off from Moss Lane near its entrance with Manchester Road with entrants crossing the finish line at Havannah Lane. Anyone who would still like to complete the walk can download a self-walking guide or pick up a free map from the Congleton Information Centre in the Town Hall.

Participants paid just £1 to enter, with the fee going to the Congleton Town Mayor’s Charities. Town Mayor, Cllr Denis Murphy said: “I would like to personally thank everybody who took part, together we raised £257 for the Town Mayor’s charity. On behalf of the Town Council I would like to thank everyone who helped and supported the event. A special mention must go to the talented Jenny Unsworth and Irene Akers who made the splendid costumes for the horses and riders provided by Terry’s field and garden maintenance. Thank you to the Rotary for their excellent marshalling services, I can confirm all the walkers made it back safely! The young people at Congleton High School raising funds for the Georgia Leigh Ogden Foundation should be commended for their hospitality and Siemens for allowing use of their car park.”
