Officers prepare to tackle the Met in rugby union clash

Staffordshire Police officers are preparing to go head-to-head with the Metropolitan Police in a rugby union cup clash this week.

The match, which will take place at Metropolitan Police RUFC in Molesey on Thursday (27 October), will see both teams compete to win the Police Athletics Association (PAA) Cup.

This will be the first time both forces will play against each other in more than 20 years.

The Staffordshire force’s team was reformed three years ago and already tasted success having retained the Quilty Cup after defeating the West Midlands Ambulance Service in a charity game on 25 April.

Coached by Alistair Muldowney, who has played at the highest level for Exeter Chiefs, Connaught and Bristol Bears, Staffordshire will head down to Surrey full of confidence.

Chief Inspector David Wain, who is part of the team,  said: “The match against the Met will undoubtedly be our toughest challenge to date.

“We are definitely relishing the opportunity to go toe-to-toe against one of the best policing rugby teams in the country and hopefully we’ll come back with some silverware!”

Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire & Rescue and Crime, Ben Adams added: “It was great for me and Helen Fisher to meet the team before they headed down to London. We wish them the very best of luck in today’s match against the Met.”
