On-call firefighter taster sessions on offer

*Updated version - change of date for session to be held at Hanley Fire and Police Station.

We are offering those who have always wanted to become a firefighter a unique opportunity. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service will host six on-call firefighter taster sessions over the next three months to give potential recruits a chance to find out more about what it’s like to be an on-call firefighter in Staffordshire. On-call firefighters are invaluable to the Service as they provide a vital response service to their local community by attending emergency incidents. Many on-call firefighters already have jobs, whether they’re in full-time or part-time work, or self-employed, and therefore fit in their ‘on-call’ hours around their day-to-day lives. Our on-call firefighters provide approximately 50 hours each week ‘on-call’ cover to their local fire station. Michelle Dudman, Watch Manager and On-Call Support Officer at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We’ll have demonstrations to show what can be expected on a call out as well as job-related activities such as assembling equipment and kit. There will also be an opportunity to have a go at the fitness side of the role too. “Even if your nearest station isn’t hosting an event this time, feel free to pop along as the sessions will cover relevant information for those interested in joining other stations too.” On-call firefighters often have primary jobs and fit their responsibilities as an on-call firefighter around their day-to-day commitments. On-call firefighters also receive the same standard of training as wholetime firefighters and therefore, respond to the same type of incidents and emergencies. Michelle added: “Our on-call firefighters come from all sorts of backgrounds and a variety of other jobs. “Our current cohort are anything from personal trainers to chefs. “If you’ve always wanted to be an on-call firefighter, but were unsure how it would fit around your day-to-day life, this is the perfect opportunity to find out how it all works.” Anyone interested in finding out more about becoming an on-call firefighter, is invited to attend one of the sessions below.
