Halloween can be a fun and exciting time of the year, but it’s important to stay safe while enjoying the festivities.
Trading Standards Officers at Staffordshire County Council have provided some advice for families, including making sure that Halloween costumes comply with safety standards, especially those for children.
Costumes should have a UKCA or CE mark, which guarantees that the products are safe. When shopping online, it’s advisable to buy from legitimate UK sources to make sure that the products comply with UK safety standards. Before buying costumes, people should also check if there are any active product recalls on them.
Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member responsible for Trading Standards at Staffordshire County Council Is reminding shoppers about the importance of buying goods from reputable retailers and being aware of the risks of counterfeit products.
Victoria said: “Counterfeit costumes are often made with sub-standard materials that do not comply with safety standards and can put the wearer at risk. Our advice is to always buy goods from reputable retailers and legitimate sources.
“It’s also important to be cautious when wearing or using Halloween costumes. People should stay away from naked flames, as store-bought and homemade costumes may not be flame retardant and could result in serious injury, which has happened in a number of high-profile cases in recent years.”
Trick-or-treating should also be done safely, and officers have provided the following tips to help ensure a safe experience:
Trick-or-treat in groups: Always go trick-or-treating with a group of friends or family members. This way, you can look out for each other and stay safe.
Stay visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing or add reflective tape to your costume. Carry a torch or glow stick to help you see and be seen.
Check your treats: Before eating any chocolate or sweets, make sure it’s properly wrapped and hasn’t been tampered with. If you’re allergic to any ingredients, check the label before eating.
