The city council’s strong stance on perpetrators remains asillegal dumping crackdown continues

A mammoth amount of illegal dumping on land in Stoke-on-Trent is cleared, with hundreds of gas cannisters uncovered.

Officers spent two days clearing Pyenest Street in Hanley and the surrounding area and removed 16 tons of mixed waste and cost the tax-payer over £3200 to clear, additionally, three £400 fixed penalty notices have also been issued to culprits over the last three months.

The clear-up revealed a colossal amount of gas cannisters, which highlighted further concerns about anti-social behaviour.

The city council has now installed a CCTV camera on the street, and is urging residents to come forward with any information related to the site.

Councillor Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for city pride, enforcement and sustainability advised: “It is incredibly important that residents report incidents like this. We want people to feel safe where they live and we want those who need support to know where that can be obtained. We are working closely with Staffordshire Police to monitor the site; our message remains clear, there is no place for illegal dumping in our towns.”

Inspector Mark Burslem, of the Stoke South local policing team, said: “We are committed to tackling community concerns working closely with partner agencies to address anti-social behaviour across Stoke-on-Trent.

“We appreciate information from local residents, as it’s important that we are made aware of any concerns as early as possible. Local officers and police community support officers continue to engage with residents and patrol areas linked to anti-social behaviour and drug use on a proactive basis.

“Work is ongoing with partner agencies to support individuals and help those most affected by substance misuse. By finding the right and appropriate support, we can help reduce demand on emergency services and free up time to support other members of the community.

“We would encourage anyone who witnesses anti-social behaviour to call us directly on 101 or send a message using the Live Chat function on our website.

"Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crimestoppers on 0800 55 111.”
