Local company, GLW Feeds Limited, is celebrating 150 years' in business and to mark the milestone they are embarking on a mission to drive 1000 miles in a tuk-tuk to raise money for three worthy charities.
On the 4th September 2023, George White, Louis White, Graham Palmer, and Jamie McDonagh, the four directors of one of the largest independent livestock and speciality feed manufacturers in the UK, GLW
Feeds Limited, is celebrating 150 years' in business by raising money for three worthy charities.
The four directors will be driving 1000 miles in a tuk-tuk over the course of four days. Starting in their home town of Shepshed in the East Midlands, the directors will travel across the East Midlands, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and returning back to Leicestershire visiting customers including farm owners from the UK's largest dairy cooperative, Arla Foods.
The business, which was founded in 1873, by George Llewellyn White, the Great, Great Grandfather of Chief Executive Officer (CEO), George White, produce a range of quality feeds and feed support services for the dairy, beef, sheep, pig and poultry industries. The company is one of the largest independent, family owned businesses in the livestock and speciality feed manufacturing industry.
With the aim to raise over £20,000, the business has selected three different charities all with a close connection to the four directors- The Air Ambulance, The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (R.A.B.I) and St Dorcas Children's Educational Centre. The Air Ambulance, provides rapid medical transport to those in need across the country and R.A.B.I offers free guidance and financial support and practical care to those within the farming community. Finally, St Dorcas Children's Educational Centre, an orphanage and educational centre for children in Kenya, holds an especially close connection to CEO, George White, who is an ambassador for the centre. Currently the centre can only provide 250ml of water each day to wash the children. The money raised from this unique event will be used to help fund the drilling of a bore hole to provide a supply of fresh drinking water for the children.
George White CEO of GLW Feeds Limited, commented on the mission: "We wanted to mark 150 years' of my families business by doing something especially for those who are most vulnerable. I want to thank everyone who is behind this mission already and has donated - so far, we've raised over £7,000 but we're hoping to raise as much money as possible for these three incredibly worthy charities. It's safe to say that riding 1000 miles on a tuk-tuk with three other directors will certainly be a challenge especially along the country roads and farm tracks of our customers! You can follow the route of our tuk-tuk via our Facebook page and we'd welcome all the support we can get whilst we travel along our route - it will certainly be an interesting sight!"
