Variant-busting booster jab rollout starts ahead of winter

Care home residents and staff in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent have this week started receiving the latest COVID-19 vaccination to gain maximum protection ahead of winter.

The NHS is the first healthcare system in the world to use the next-generation, bivalent vaccine as the COVID-19 vaccination programme moves into its next phase.

Dr Paddy Hannigan, COVID-19 Clinical Lead at Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “As with previous campaigns, the oldest and most vulnerable will be called forward first, with people able to book online or by calling 119 if it has been three months since their last dose.

“COVID-19 has not gone away, and it is really important to get the next dose of the vaccine when you are invited so that you have the best protection against the virus over the winter months.”

The National Booking Service has opened ahead of the wider rollout due to start next week, which will see people over 75 and those most at risk from coronavirus invited to come forward for their vaccine. The NHS will contact people when it is their turn to book in. You do not need to contact the NHS.

The autumn booster campaign is among a package of NHS measures to prepare for winter, including ramping up bed capacity and increasing the number of 999 and NHS 111 staff to deal with any additional pressure.

The JCVI and MHRA have stressed that the original vaccines also continue to provide great protection and that people should come forward regardless of the vaccine offered.

Dr Hannigan added: “The annual flu jab is also available this autumn and I would encourage those who are eligible to take up the offer when they are invited to ensure they are protected from flu this winter too. Some sites may offer COVID-19 and flu vaccine at the same time.”
