Review:Sunny Side Up at the New Vic
Oh we do like to be beside the seaside, or do we?
Sunny Side Up written by John Goldberg is at the New Vic Theatre, Newcastle under Lyme until Saturday 30th October. This is a co-production by the John Godber Company and the Theatre Royal, Wakefield.
It is a humorous story of life in a Yorkshire seaside B&B. It tells the story of the family who run it, Cath, Tina and Barney. It addresses the effects of the lockdown on the hospitality industry, the social issues affecting seaside towns and family who drift apart.
It is played brilliantly by the cast who created a bubble of four to enable them to perform. The cast is Martha Godber as Cath, Jane Thornton as Tina and John Godber as Barney. They each play multiple parts seamlessly. There is an excellent use of 60’s music to separate each scene. The writing is poignant and witty with some excellent one-liners delivered with spot on timing.
I can highly recommend this play so may I suggest you have a day trip to the seaside and relax in Sunny Side by the Sea.
I will certainly look forward to seeing what the writings of John Godber offer next.
